OBAMA: I have to tell you that over the course of several years as I have talked to friends and family and neighbors when I think about members of my own staff who are in incredibly committed monogamous relationships, same-sex relationships, who are raising kids together, when I think about those soldiers or airmen or marines or sailors who are out there fighting on my behalf and yet feel constrained, even now that Don’t Ask Don’t Tell is gone, because they are not able to commit themselves in a marriage, at a certain point I’ve just concluded that for me personally it is important for me to go ahead and affirm that I think same sex couples should be able to get married.

Fun.: Chart-Topping Band Plans Marriage Equality Organization:

Members of the band fun., which is currently enjoying an inescapable hit with their single “We Are Young,” next have their eyes set on creating a marriage equality non-profit, according to a profile in The Washington Post.

The success of the song —it’s hit number 1 on Billboard’s singles charts and been performed on Glee— has been a surprise to the indie pop band, composed of vocalist Nate Ruess, keyboardist Andrew Dost, and guitarist Jack Antonoff. The musicians, all of whom are straight, see the opportunity to use their new platform to bring attention to an issue about which they’re equally passionate —LGBT rights. The three men “hope to establish a nonprofit organization in support of same-sex marriage,”according to the Post.

“We’re firm believers in the idea that if you’re not talking about it, you’re part of the problem,” Antonoff says. “We realize we have an audience, and it would be a real shame to waste it.”

New research has explained why the smalleye pygmy shark (pictured, with a yolk sac still attached) and lantern shark are able to make their bellies glow: camouflage. Whenever these small sharks swim close to the surface, they put themselves at risk of being spotted by larger predators below them. The glowing bellies are a form of counter-illumination, allowing their silhouette to blend in with the bright sky above.

I went to see The Cat Empire last night at Neumos. The musicianship and the energy was incredible. Every song they played was an extended version highlighting a different instrument or member of the band. They are headed into the studio soon to record a new album and I can hardly wait.

If you ever have a chance to see them live, do it! You will not regret it.

The Conversation about women’s bodies exists largely outside of us, while it is also directed at (and marketed to) us, and used to define and control us. The Conversation about women happens everywhere, publicly and privately. We are described and detailed, our faces and bodies analyzed and picked apart, our worth ascertained and ascribed based on the reduction of personhood to simple physical objectification. Our voices, our personhood, our potential, and our accomplishments are regularly minimized and muted.

As an actor and woman who, at times, avails herself of the media, I am painfully aware of the conversation about women’s bodies, and it frequently migrates to my own body. I know this, even though my personal practice is to ignore what is written about me. I do not, for example, read interviews I do with news outlets. I hold that it is none of my business what people think of me. I arrived at this belief after first, when I began working as an actor 18 years ago, reading everything. I evolved into selecting only the “good” pieces to read. Over time, I matured into the understanding that good and bad are equally fanciful interpretations. I do not want to give my power, my self-esteem, or my autonomy, to any person, place, or thing outside myself. I thus abstain from all media about myself. The only thing that matters is how I feel about myself, my personal integrity, and my relationship with my Creator. Of course, it’s wonderful to be held in esteem and fond regard by family, friends, and community, but a central part of my spiritual practice is letting go of otheration. And casting one’s lot with the public is dangerous and self-destructive, and I value myself too much to do that.

I found this diagram the other day, and thought it was really interesting and very funny. It just goes to show how trivial and ridiculous reality TV is (and always has been). However it is interesting to note current trends in reality TV, which this diagram illustrates very clearly. Who knew shows about swamps, Louisiana, Cake would draw so many viewers?

This is a really cool way to look at reality television.
